Reconnecting the City and the Port.
In Bassens, the port and the city have grown side by side for more than a century, yet have remained largely disconnected. Port infrastructure, industrial activities and the landscapes of the Garonne River define a strategic territory where the interfaces between production and everyday life remain largely inaccessible and underused.
Following Europan 16, the three winning teams continued working together to help Bordeaux Métropole, the Port Authority and the City of Bassens develop a shared vision for this industrial and port landscape. The project evolved through site visits, workshops and ongoing dialogue with local stakeholders, testing the competition proposals against the realities of the territory.
Rather than opposing urban and productive uses, the project explores new forms of coexistence between the city and the port. It reveals overlooked industrial landscapes, opens new public routes, encourages temporary uses and supports the gradual transformation of the territory through flexible and reversible interventions.
More than a masterplan, the project establishes a long-term framework for reconnecting port activities, public space and everyday urban life.
